About Dental Autoclave

Sterilization is the procedure of abolishing all the micro-organisms present on the surface of any instruments, either they are pathogenic or non-pathogenic, whether in spore form or in vegetative form. When any of the object that is carried in the process of sterilization and after it is being free from all the living beings, is known as a sterile object.

For a dental clinic it is very important to carry out sterilization on a regular basis for all the reusable instruments. The most effective method for dental instruments sterilization is the steam under pressure technique. This kind of sterilization can be achieved by the use of an autoclave sterilization procedure in a dental care office.

Autoclave Machine

Autoclave Steam Sterilizer Machine is usually used for healthcare system. An autoclave is a machine that devastates dangerous microorganisms, virus, Fungi and spore on dental instruments that are put within a high pressure chamber by using steam.

This autoclave can be categorised into Top loading autoclave or front loading autoclave as per the dentist’s requirements.

Steam Sterilization of dental instruments are effective on all of the living microorganisms as steam has a greater efficacy to kill the vegetative as well as the spore form of the living organisms.

History of Dental Autoclave

Autoclave is the combination of two different words, “Auto” means self in Greek and “Clavis” means locking device in Latin. Autoclave was invented by French Microbiologist Charles Chamberland for medical use in 1879. New autoclave Technology e.g. pre-vacuum cycle in 1958 and steam-flush pressure in 1987 were introduced for use in healthcare industry.

Working of Sterilizer Machine

The used dental instruments are placed inside the chamber. The items to be autoclaved are subjected to high temperature and high pressure. The process is as below:

  1. Distilled water boils to form steam in high temperature
  2. Pressure also increases inside the chamber
  3. Saturated steam has penetrating capacity
  4. Items to be sterilized should be kept separated inside the chamber for proper penetration and sterilization
  5. Irreversible denaturation of enzyme and structural proteins of microorganisms lead to destruction when exposed to steam under pressure in autoclave
  6. After sterilization the steam is removed from the chamber and depressurization occur for the items to get dry
  7. Items are now autoclaved to be used further
Advantages of Autoclave Sterilization
  • Most effective decontamination method for healthcare industry
  • Fastest sterilization with short cycle time
  • Good penetration capacity for effective sterilization
  • Easy to operate
  • No specific chemicals required

Frequently Asked Questions

Front-loading autoclave has a trays system with the availability of maximum space to keep the dental instruments and very easy to place the instruments. Along with that the control panel allows easy operation. It also provides the dentist to choose the temperature for the sterilization of different types of instruments.

B class steam sterilizer or autoclave is equipped with a triple vacuum cycle. The first vacuum cycle removes the contaminated air from the chamber, the 2nd vacuum cycle occurs after the sterilization, that removes the moisture from the chamber. The 3rd vacuum cycle occurs after the dry cycle for the assurance of the effective sterilization.

The distilled water is free from all the salts or minerals, so the internal valves and parts of the autoclave don’t get rusted and the durability is enhanced. So, it is recommended to use only distilled water in the autoclave rather than using tap water.

In Gnatus Bioclave 21L, 350ml of distilled water is poured inside the chamber, then the trays are placed with the instruments to be sterilized. After that the sterilization cycle is started.
